Played at schoolboy and apprentice level during the war years.
He was Ronnie Starling's boot boy.
He was offered terms by Walsall after being released but opted to join army regulars. He was in the army until 1958. While in the army he played for various army regiment sides for a few years (these sides where far better than today's army sides due to all males completing national service). He took up refereeing around 1954 and refereed non league up to todays Conference level until around 1962 when he retired due to injury.
